The two leading credit card companies in the world today are the competitors Visa and MasterCard. The next step for Visa and MasterCard was to create standalone “Gift Cards”, which were originally loaded with a prepaid balance and could be used just as a Visa or MasterCard, but purchases were debited from the actual prepaid balance, and required no bank account.
In 2013, Mastercard was under investigation by the European Union for the high fees it charged merchants to accept cards issued outside the EU, compared to cards issued in the EU, as well as other anti-competitive practices that could hinder electronic commerce and international trade, and high fees associated with premium credit cards.
Some Content, Products or Services may have fees associated with their use, which shall be described on the Platform, through the MasterCard Standards (defined below) or in your separate agreement with us. Any such fees will be invoiced by us and paid by you via the MasterCard Consolidated Billing System (MCBSâ€) unless you and we agree otherwise.
