“I would like to know how to clean an electric cooking range. It is the kind of cook-top with the metal coils. Are these coils removable? If not, how would I go about cleaning the drip pans underneath them?”
Yes, you can indeed remove the coil elements.
Try these techniques :
Look to see where the elements enter the stove top and exactly opposite of where they enter, lift up gently until the metal where the coil touched the drip pan is clear of the stove top (probably only 1/2 inch). Then pull the coil element out sort of like you would pull out a plug from the socket. They slide back in the same way.
Once you have removed the element then you can remove the metal ring and drip pan.
If they have a lot of spills and burnt food on them, soak them for a while in hot water and use a pot scrubber and scrub them clean using dish soap.
If you have a dish washer then a short cut would be to put the drip pan and ring in the dishwasher on the pot & pans cycle. You may have put them through a couple of times before they will look good again.
You will have to hand wash the element ( do not immerse the element in water ). Be sure the element is completely dry before placing it back on the stovetop.
Another tip to make the scrubbing easier is to spray oven cleaner on the drip pans and rings and let sit according to the oven cleaners instructions and then wipe
